Inspired by the concept of "Atopolis," the No City series considers how subconscious inherited memories of a cultural past, which connect diasporic people, can manifest in mysterious ways and unpredictable ways. Stainless steel, iron, and bronze, metals associated with the structures of the city, become diffuse puffs of smoke and dust. Delicate and sensitive mulberry paper and ink, important materials in the transmission of Chinese art and culture through history, become powerful. The paper, normally the ground upon which ink acts and creates forms, becomes its own structure and force, collaborating with ink in equal measure. This series investigates the many ways our physical environments and inherited pasts collaborate to form our unique visions of reality.
